Firstly, the copyright page is done entirely wrong, and gives little recognition to the original story, other than the author's name. It also has 8 glaring typos/grammatical errors, and to top it off, repeats an entire paragraph and sentence twice! Considering this is a reprint of a copyrighted work, to publish such errors that are not in the original text is illegal. Beyond that, it is shameful and completely disrespectful to this very important classic and E.M. Forster. Do not buy this edition and promote this disaster. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from Nadia Lewis -- Not a review of the plot but the product : I am not here to review the plot of this short story, I believe there are plenty of other reviews on this website that will give you enough insight about it. I bought a Kindle version of this book, and although I know I payed a very minimal amount for this book, it was incredibly frustrating to see numerous grammatical errors in this version! Please have a copy-editor or even somebody with *basic* grammar skills to go over the content and fix this -- I don't understand if this is a digital replication of an original, classic, physical book, that has been in publication for YEARS, why there are so many errors. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from JAK -- A Read for the age of COVID : It borders on the ridiculous that I just got around to reading this.I read Brave New World ,1984,We ,Farenheit 451 and The Player Piano decades ago and I knew about this book.I'm big on dystopia! Well maybe I was lucky.If you read this book in the age of covid , I think it will defintely resonate.It's not great literature.There is no real character development , not much of a story and while the prose is solid , it's not dazzling.But his is a sharp , prescient novella .It does remind you of the world we live in now in discomforting ways.It also doesn't take long to read! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Don Barzyk -- Prophetic of 2019, written in 1909 : Our most advanced technological devices and "vices" are ACCURATELY described albeit by different names along with our current behavioral tendencies. Often we marvel at long science fiction novels which get this or that right with descriptions of the future - i.e. lasers, robots, space travel. This book however, written in 1909, identifies most of the primary drivers of our society today in 50 pages. Before even a hint of commercial air travel, cell phones, Amazon, the internet, Facebook, or online learning, Forster nails today's world with an accuracy which will have you thinking he must have visited our "now" to write this way back then. An excellent read for students looking for essay material or teachers wanting to classes to reflect upon the present human condition. Along with Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein and H.G. Wells, E.M. Forster was chosen by the Science Fiction Writers of America in 1973 to be in the Science Fiction Hall of Fame for this story. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Juanita M. Price -- The Machine Stops, written in 1909 : I read this Novella many years ago, it made a profound impression on me. The machine is obviously a computer, written in 1909, so forward thinking. It is also frightening that people become so dependent on the machine and so isolated that they cannot function without it. It had typo errors but that is ok, the sentiment is well written. I highly recommend it for everyone that carries their cell phone everywhere they go. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Quito B. -- An ambitious and terse imagining of future technology influencing our lives : Think of this short story like a silhouette or dreamed future in chiaroscuro. Forster doesn't have anything fully developed to offer the way someone like Orwell might with 1984, but The Machine Stops captures a truth to us today about ourselves in relation to electronic technology that we wouldn't have fully understood just a couple decades ago. The recently released report on U.S. susceptibility to EMPs further solidifies what Forster aims to express in The Machine Stops. If an EMP from China or Russia hit the East Coast, how would people live? We all use email and cars. Nuclear reactors would melt because electricity keeps their cooling mechanisms active. GPS would more than likely be inaccessible. In short, The Machine Stops cautions us of our increasing dependence on electric and electronic technologies whose question poses, what will we do when we can no longer maintain that dependence? While contemporary readers might have had difficulty wrapping their minds around the concept of an isolated existence, a life consisting entirely of mental activity and long-distance relationships, we now just call that kind of life 2020. People spend all day looking at screens and can do nothing for themselves. And they have a meltdown if Facebook crashes! I have watched a lot of what the future will be like videos on Youtube and most got it so wrong. And Forster was way closer than anybody else. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2016 )

Lowe Watson -- Extraordinarily prescient work, but a poor Kindle version : It's amazing that in 1909, EM Forster anticipated not only the internet and social media, but also Artificial Intelligence (AI). In this dysfunctional future short story or novella, humans live in underground cocoons physically isolated from each other and communicating almost entirely by video links, in a world completely controlled by a 'mechanical' intelligence, The Machine, which they no longer understand and have begun to worship.
